iOS 6 beta 3 OTA update failing for some users
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Software,
As we reported earlier, Apple has released iOS 6 beta 3 to developers. However, as with any beta, there are still some bugs to be ironed out. Reports are coming in that the over-the-air update is failing for some users, with an error message that states "Software Update Failed: An error occurred downloading iOS 6 beta 3.". To initiate an OTA update, you go into the Updates section of the settings app, and tap on Download and Install. The failure occurs almost immediately after doing this. Mutiple hard reboots don't seem to fix the issue. It seems that users that are caught in the OTA fail loop will need to wait until the iOS 6 beta 3 10a5355d images become available on the Apple dev portal, using iTunes to manually update their devices.

Apple has just released iOS 6 beta 3 as an over-the-air download a few minutes ago, in line with what we reported earlier today. This release comes a little over a month after the initial iOS 6 beta that was released during WWDC 2012, and just over two weeks since iOS beta 2 was made available. If you're on an iPhone 4S the download 347 MB in size, a little larger than the 332 MB that iOS 6 beta 2 was. The beta 3 update on the new iPad weighs in at 424 MB, a substantial decrease from the 527 MB that beta 2 saw. Check Software Update in your settings app to grab it now!

If the image above is correct, it looks like Apple is set to release iOS 6 beta 3 to developers any minute now. It usually takes a while to propagate to all the servers across the world, but if you're an iOS dev, chances are that you'll likely be seeing an over-the-air update pushed to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices that are running the current beta. Once we see it on our end, we'll let you know.

We just hit you with our full Apple iPad Smart Case review, and you should really check that out if you're considering picking up Apple's first full case for its popular tablet. In addition to the written review, we've put together a gallery of images showing off the good and the bad--and there's a lot of bad in our mind. As you'll see, ports don't line up with the holes in the case, and there's an odd lip all around the perimeter that just makes it awkward to hold. Go and judge for yourself in our iPad Smart Case gallery, and let us know what you think.

This week Apple released the iPad Smart Case, a polyurethane product that covers and protects both the front and back of the the iPad shell. Compatible with both the iPad 2 and the new third-generation iPad, this is the first full case that Apple has offered for its popular tablet, and it's being sold for $49. The Smart Case seems to make a lot of sense in theory, but how does it fare in practice? Read on as we answer that question in our iPad Smart Case review.

In iOS 6 you’ll be able to use FaceTime over cell networks
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Wireless / WiFi,
Beginning in iOS 6, you'll be able to use FaceTime over cellular networks. This feature was announced during the WWDC 2012 keynote and is a big deal because it means you can FaceTime with anyone, as long as you have a cell signal. You can be out and about getting your video chat on, and this will bring FaceTime out from the occassional use category and into something that may actually prove to be very useful.
Siri in iOS 6 brings sports, cinema, restaurant integration

Apple's Siri hs learned a bunch of new tricks that it will be bringing with it alongside the launch of iOS 6 later this fall. During this morning's WWDC 2012 keynote, we got a look at a few of them. First, iOS chief Scott Forstall demo'd sports integration. Siri will now be able to tell you about recent sports scores, individual players, and even odd trivia (as an example, Siri was able to answer a question that asked who was taller between "LeBrone or Kobe".) Next, restaurant reviews and reservations. Through integration with OpenTable and Yelp, Siri can now show more details about restaurants, reviews, and pricing. In addition, you can tap to make a reservation right in the OpenTable app. Siri can also show you details about movies. You can get movies reviews from Siri thanks to a partnership with Rotten Tomatoes, movie trailers, as well as local showtimes. Siri can even show you movie catalog information. While all that is awesome, we are even more excited about the fact that Siri can now be used to do things like launch apps and post to Twitter.
All of this new Siri functionality will also come to the new third-generation iPad in iOS 6 as well, adding English and French tuned for Canada, Spanish tuned for Spain, Mexico, and the US, Korean, Mandarin tuned for Taiwan, Cantonese tuned for Hong Kong, and Mandarin and Cantonese tuned for China.
